About the SCHIP Coalition
Kansas Action for Children spearheads the state’s SCHIP Coalition, which is a broad coalition of Kansas organizations that support health care coverage for all eligible children and preservation of state flexibility in the design of SCHIP programs.
What is SCHIP?SCHIP, the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, was created 10 years ago to provide health insurance for children who were not eligible for Medicaid, but whose families were unable to afford private insurance. SCHIP has reduced the number of uninsured children by one-third over the past decade. The original legislations for SCHIP expired at the end of the 2007 federal fiscal year, and must be reauthorized by the current Congress in order to continue providing health care access for eligible children in Kansas and across the country.
What does SCHIP mean for Kansas?SCHIP funding provides more than 35,000 eligible Kansas children with access to health insurance through the state’s HealthWave program. Without SCHIP funding, the number of uninsured Kansas children would be 63 percent.
Who belongs to the SCHIP Coalition?More than 60 local and statewide organizations make up the Kansas SCHIP Coalition. Download a complete list of Coalition members.
