Be a Healthy Role Model
by Madison Stadel, Burlington Middle School
Have you ever had any ideas about how you could get your community involved in more healthy activities? Well, here are some of my ideas.
For one, get off the couch, computer, or phone and get physical. Obesity has become a very serious problem in today’s society. Researchers predict that nearly half of the children in North America by 2010 will be obese. The earlier you introduce your kids to physical activities the more likely they are to e active throughout their life. You don’t have to be athletic to physically active.
Make it fun! You can be in organized activities like karate, gymnastics, and also activities that use music. My favorites are volleyball and basketball.
Not into the gym? There are many video games such as, Wii Sports and Fitness or Dance-Dance Revolution. These are just a few of the ways you could keep it fun.
Make it a family thing! Shut off the TV, and get outside. Set up an obstacle course, volleyball net, or even a fun inside game like Twister. Walk your dog, go to the park, or take a family trip to the local swimming pool. Allow your child to pick out a low cost toy such as a Frisbee, or ball instead of an unhealthy snack.
Healthy snacks can be fun for kids and good family time together. Here are some fun, easy snacks ideas, Fruit kabobs, homemade trail mix with mixed nuts, raisins and dried fruits, also you could make healthy fruit smoothies.
Being a role model is the easiest and best way to get your children and family healthy. This time together being physically active and planning healthy meals will not only be good for them physically but mentally too. Are you up for the challenge?
