 Afterschool Programs

  • Afterschool Alliance a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of afterschool programs and advocating for quality, affordable programs for all children. Afterschool Alliance seeks to ensure that all children have access to afterschool programs by 2010. 
  • Afterschool.gov one-stop access to government resources that support afterschool programs. This site provides information on issues that face children and teens, as well as links to resources to fund, start and operate an afterschool program. 
  • At-Risk.org resource for parents and others in search of information about at-risk youth. This site offers tips for helping at-risk youth.
  • Fight Crime: Invest in Kids a bipartisan, nonprofit anti-crime organization led by more than 2,000 police chiefs, sheriffs, prosecutors, victims of violence and leaders of police officer associations. Its mission is to take a hard-nosed, skeptical look at the research about what really works - and what doesn't work - to keep children and teens from becoming involved with criminal activity.
  • Kansas Enrichment Network a partnership of state and national agencies, businesses, faith-based and community organizations, nonprofits, philanthropies and individuals dedicated to supporting and sustaining afterschool programs across the state.
  • National Institute for Out-of-School Time has brought national attention to the importance of children’s out-of-school time. This site serves as a clearinghouse of information on what's happening across the country to improve education, training and compensation for the out-of-school time workforce.

Child Abuse Reporting

  • In Kansas To report suspected child abuse in Kansas, call 1-800-922-5330.
  • Outside Kansas For national child abuse information, call the Childhelp USA National Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-4-A-CHILD or 1-800-2-A-CHILD (TDD). Tyhis hotline is staffed 24 hours a day with professional crisis counselors.

Child Protection

  • Child Welfare Information Gateway national resource for professionals seeking information on the prevention, identification and treatment of child abuse and neglect, and related child welfare issues. The Clearinghouse provides research, statistics, information on state laws, and resources on such topics as prevention, child protection, out-of-home care and permanency planning.
  • Prevent Child Abuse America works to prevent the abuse and neglect of children through efforts that encourage valuing children, strengthening families and engaging communities. The organization’s programs, research, media campaigns and activities - at both the state and local level - have provided leadership to child abuse prevention efforts nationwide.
  • National Coalition for Child Protection Reform nonprofit organization dedicated to making the child welfare system better serve America's most vulnerable children through policy changes concerning child abuse, foster care and family preservation.
  • Sunflower House a child abuse prevention center and child advocacy center serving Wyandotte and Johnson counties in Kansas. 

Child Safety

  • Kansas SAFE KIDS Inc. coalition of state and regional organizations and businesses dedicated to preventing unintentional injuries among Kansas children ages 14 and under.
  • Kansas State Child Death Review Board examines trends and patterns that identify risk factors in the deaths of Kansas children, from birth through 17 years of age. The board develops prevention strategies, including community education and professional training to help combat preventable deaths of children.
  • National Highway Traffic Safety Administration federal government agency responsible for reducing deaths, injuries and economic losses resulting from motor vehicle crashes. The mission of NHTSA’s Occupant Protection Division is to provide national leadership in the planning and development of traffic injury control programs in the areas of safety belt and child safety seat use.
  • National SAFE KIDS Campaign the first and only national nonprofit organization dedicated solely to the prevention of unintentional childhood injury — the No. 1 cause of death among children ages 14 and under.
 
Child Advocacy
  • Children 's Defense Fund private, nonprofit organization that seeks to provide a strong, effective voice for all children. CDF educates the nation about the needs of children and encourages preventive investment before children get sick or into trouble, drop out of school, or suffer family breakdown.
  • Children's Partnership national, nonprofit organization with a mission to inform leaders and the public about the needs of America's children. The Partnership undertakes research and policy analysis, publishes reports and multimedia materials, and forges new alliances among parents, policymakers and the private sector to achieve tangible gains for children.
  • Child Trends, Inc. nonprofit, nonpartisan research organization that studies children, youth and families through research, data collection and data analysis.
  • Child Welfare League of America largest national nonprofit organization devoted to the development and promotion of policies and programs designed to protect America's children and strengthen America's families.
  • Children NOW national children's advocacy organization that utilizes research and mass communications to make the well-being of children a priority across the nation. This site includes a directory of children's resources available on the Web.
  • Connect for Kids provides solutions-oriented coverage of critical issues for children and families. 
  • CYFERnet national network of Land Grant university faculty and county extension educators working to support community-based educational programs for children, youth and families.
  • Kansas Legal Services Children's Advocacy Resource Center Kansas Legal Services operates the Children’s Advocacy Resource Center, a resource of information for guardians at litem, social workers, judges and child advocates. 1-877-298-2674.
  • Partnership for Children works to improve conditions for children and youth in the Greater Kansas City area by mobilizing community advocates to work on behalf on children.
  • Voices for America's Children national organization devoted to building the capacity of state and local child advocacy organizations. Voices establishes links between state and local child advocates and national experts, and provides a clearinghouse of information on issues affecting children and effective advocacy. Kansas Action for Children is a member organization.
  • YouthPolicy Action Center Web-based resource that helps youth and concerned adults regularly contact elected officials about important programs and initiatives. The Center strives to level the political playing field, bringing technological savvy and mass outreach efforts to scale for those who believe young people are our nation’s most precious resource.

  • Allied Vaccine Group presents reliable, scientific information about the subject of vaccines and immunizations.
  • American Academy of Pediatrics national organization of pediatricians that dedicates its efforts and resources to the health, safety and well-being of infants, children, adolescents and young adults.
  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention the leading federal agency for protecting the health and safety of all people. This site includes an A-Z listing of health topics, including a thorough listing of infant and children's health issues.
  • Children's Dental Health Project works to assist policymakers, health care providers, advocates and parents in improving children's oral health and increasing their access to dental care through policy change.
  • Families USA national nonprofit, non-partisan organization dedicated to the achievement of high-quality, affordable health and long-term care for all Americans. Families USA works at the national, state and community level as a voice for health care consumers.
  • Health Care Financing Administration federal agency that administers the Medicare, Medicaid and Child Health Insurance Programs.
  • KidsHealth one of the largest sites on the Web providing doctor-approved health information about children from birth through adolescence. This site offers separate resource areas for children, teens, and parents.
  • Kansas Health Foundation philanthropic organization that provides grants to organizations throughout the state that share the Foundation's mission to improve the quality of health in Kansas. The Foundation concentrates on children's health issues, leadership and public health in Kansas.
  • Kansas Health Institute an independent, non-profit health policy and research organization. KHI conducts research and policy analysis on issues that affect the health of Kansans and communicates that information so that informed decisions may be made to optimize the health of Kansans.
  • KDHE Oral Health Initiative seeks to increase awareness regarding the importance of oral health and improve oral health status by providing education, consultation, and training that focuses on health promotion and disease prevention.
  • Knowledge of Nutrition and Activity for Communities in Kansas helps parents, community advocates and youth workers address adolescent overweight and obesity through evidence-based, reliable and action-oriented resources. KNACK works to empower stakeholders so they can influence the environment and social norms of children with the purpose of helping children become more physically active and make healthier eating choices.

  • Oral Health Kansas statewide oral health coalition of over 100 members dedicated to helping Kansas become a national leader in oral health education, prevention and treatment.  The coalition's main areas of focus are advocacy, public awareness and education.
  • Your Mouth Matters oral health public awareness campaign established by Kansas Action for Children. The campaign is designed to educate the public and policymakers about the importance of children's oral health in Kansas.
Child Poverty & Welfare Reform
  • Center for Law and Social Policy national non-profit organization with expertise in both law and policy affecting the poor. Through education, policy research and advocacy, CLASP seeks to improve the economic security of low-income families with children and secure access for low-income persons to the civil justice system.|
  • Center on Budget and Policy Priorities one of the nation's premiere policy organizations working at the federal and state level on fiscal policy and public programs that affect low- and moderate-income families and individuals.
  • Food Research and Action Center national organization that works to improve public policies to eradicate hunger and under-nutrition in the United States. FRAC is a nonprofit and nonpartisan research and public policy center that serves as the hub of an anti-hunger network that includes thousands of individuals and agencies across the country. 
  • Institute for Research on Poverty national, university-based center for research on the causes and consequences of poverty and social inequality in the United States. It is one of two centers designated as a National Poverty Research Center by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and offers a directory of Web sites dealing with poverty and children.
  • National Center for Children in Poverty nonprofit, nonpartisan research and policy organization that identifies and promotes strategies to prevent child poverty in the United States.
  • Welfare Information Network clearinghouse for information, policy analysis and technical assistance on welfare reform. This site provides one-stop access to more than 9,000 online resources regarding poverty and welfare. 
  • Welfare Law Center works with and on behalf of low-income people to ensure that adequate income support is available whenever and to the extent necessary to meet basic needs, and to foster healthy human and family development.

Early Child Care & Education

  • National Association for the Education of Young Children the nation's largest organization of early childhood educators and others dedicated to improving the quality of programs for children from birth through third grade. The organization and its networks aim to improve professional practice and working conditions in early childhood education and to build public support for high-quality early childhood programs. 
  • National Child Care Information Center (a service of the Child Care Bureau) a national clearinghouse and technical assistance center that links parents, providers, policymakers, researchers and the public to early care and education information.
  • National Institute on Early Childhood Development and Education national organization conducting research and development to improve the well-being of children under age eight and their families. The Institute is supported by the Office of Educational Research and Improvement in the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Trust for Early Education established in 2002 to provide an advocacy voice for high-quality, voluntary pre-Kindergarten for all three- and four-year olds. The Trust works at the state and federal level to educate policymakers, media and the general public about the potential of pre-Kindergarten to improve outcomes for America's young children.
  • Zero to Three: National Center for Infants Toddlers and Families a leading national resource on the first three years of life. The organization aims to strengthen and support families, practitioners and communities to promote the healthy development of babies and toddlers. 
  • Child Care Source partnership between two Kansas City area resource and referral agencies - Heart of America Family Services and the Midwest Whole Child Development Group - that provides comprehensive child care resource and referral services to parents, early learning professionals and business and community members.
  • Francis Child Development Institute a Kansas City institute established to provide accessible, affordable quality education for early child care and education professionals.
  • Kansas Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies a statewide network of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies that serve all 105 Kansas counties. KACCRRA aims to ensure that high-quality early education is available to all Kansas families.
  • Metropolitan Council on Early Learning extensive information on the efforts to improve the quality of early child care and education in the greater Kansas City area.

 
Family Support & Community-Building

  • Family Support America promotes family support as the nationally-recognized movement to strengthen and support America’s families. This site has information about available family support programs, including news affecting children and families, family support legislation, family support resources and success stories.
  • CTW Online: Sesame Street Parents operated by the nonprofit Children's Television Workshop, this site is a fun and informative resource for parents and children that includes information on children's activities, behavior and discipline, child development, education, and health and safety.
  • Community Building Resource Exchange provides a broad array of resources and information about innovative community-building efforts to revitalize poor neighborhoods and improve environments for residents and their families.
  • Community Tool Box promotes community health and development by connecting people, ideas and resources. This site includes skill-building information on 150 community topics.
  • Connect for Kids a project of the Benton Foundation that aims to help adults make their communities better places for families and children.

Juvenile Justice

 

  • ABA Juvenile Justice Center a national organization dedicated to monitoring and influencing the policy, practice, fiscal and administrative changes in juvenile justice systems across the nation. The Center deals with a variety of juvenile justice issues, and provides leadership to judges, practitioners, bar associations, youth workers, correctional agency staff and policymakers.
  • Fight Crime: Invest in Kids a national anti-crime organization made up of more than 1,000 police chiefs, sheriffs, prosecutors and victims of violence. The organization has produced and sponsored several reports that illustrate how effective crime prevention is proven to help children get the right start in life. 
  • National Crime Prevention Council a national nonprofit educational organization and a source of help for individuals, neighborhoods, communities and governments. The Council’s mission is to enable citizens to create safer and more caring communities by addressing the causes of crime and violence, and reducing the opportunities for crime to occur.
  • Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention as part of the U.S. Justice Department, this office provides national leadership, coordination and resources to prevent and respond to juvenile delinquency and victimization. The Office supports states and local communities in their efforts to develop and implement effective and coordinated prevention and intervention programs, and to improve the juvenile justice system. 
  • Youth Crime Watch a youth-led movement to help young people actively reduce crime and drug use in their schools and communities.
