FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
March 13, 2019
TOPEKA, Kansas – Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly will be a special guest and speaker at Kansas Action for Children’s screening of the early childhood education documentary “No Small Matter” at 6 p.m., March 18, in the Capitol Plaza Hotel.
The dinner and movie will feature opening remarks from the governor, as well as a panel afterward featuring voices from the business and early education spheres. State lawmakers, community leaders, and child care advocates will be in the audience. The event is open to the press.
“Making sure that Kansas kids have access to high-quality early learning is incredibly important,” said KAC President and CEO Annie McKay. “Our state’s future depends on their success. We can take immediate steps to make this care available to more parents and children.”
The film “No Small Matter” offers an in-depth look at childcare and early learning as the filmmakers explore the most overlooked, underestimated, and powerful force for good in America today: early childhood education. Through poignant stories and surprising humor, the film lays out the overwhelming evidence for the importance of the first five years, and reveals how our failure to act on that evidence has resulted in an everyday crisis for American families, and a slow-motion catastrophe for the country.

“We look forward to a dialogue between providers, parents, and state officials about how to make sure that Kansas kids thrive,” McKay said. “This event allows us to come together for an evening and focus on what really matters. We plan to bring the film to other communities across the state this spring, so the conversations can continue.”
The event will take place at the Emerald Ballroom in the Capitol Plaza Hotel, 1717 SW Topeka Blvd., Topeka. The panel discussion will begin after the film ends, at 7:40 p.m.
