“Big Bill, Big Problems”: Telling Kansans the Truth about H.R. 1
By Kansas Action for Children | October 23, 2025
Earlier this month, we hit the road with a few partners to hold community conversations around federal funding cuts. One thing became clear: Kansans are worried about what it means for their family, friends, and neighbors.
From September 29 to October 2, Kansas Action for Children joined the Alliance for a Healthy Kansas and Kansas Appleseed to tell Kansans across the state about the fine print in the “Big, Beautiful Bill” passed by Congress in July.
From Medicaid and SNAP cuts to tax favoritism and ballooning national debt, we’re spreading the word about how Kansans will see their access to affordable health care, enough groceries, and long-term financial security dwindle when many provisions of H.R. 1 go into effect across the next decade.
Our groups made four stops across Kansas – Garden City, Hutchinson, Iola, and Manhattan – to tell communities what these changes mean for everyday working families.
The conversations focused on:
- Food insecurity and access to enough groceries
- Affordable health care access and Medicaid expansion
- Tax policy and family financial security
What we heard from Kansans was sobering. People shared about large-scale job losses already hitting their communities. Others expressed deep concerns about more people going hungry, health care premiums on Healthcare.gov becoming unaffordable due to Congress’ inaction, and the cost of living continuing to climb amid federal economic policies.
No matter what corner of the state we were in, a common thread emerged: Kansans don’t feel like state or national politicians are considering the broad impact of their decision making. As the federal funding cuts begin to cascade into our communities, Kansans will need to stay informed now more than ever and share the truth of how their friends and family are being affected. Kansas has faced tough times before, and we’ll continue with determination and hard work to turn back these changes so more struggling families have access to the resources they need to thrive.
