New administration needs to step up for Kansas kids

The 35,000 Kansas babies who will be born during the first year of Laura Kelly’s administration won’t care about the governor.
They won’t care about her party or ideology.
They will care about whether their needs are being met.
Do they have high-quality opportunities to learn and grow? Do they have safe and nurturing places and spaces? Will they be able to see a doctor if they get sick? They will need all Kansans to come together and work for them.
Kansas Action for Children congratulates our state’s governor elect and the incoming legislature. This campaign season has been lengthy and bruising, but it’s important to remember that the principles that undergird our work remain critical.
“Those 35,000 kids can’t wait,” said Annie McKay, KAC president and CEO. “We need all Kansans to step up and invest in proven programs that strengthen children and families.”
KAC’s goal for four decades has been to make our state the best place to raise and be a child. We have and will collaborate with all interested policy makers — on both sides of the aisle — to make this vision a reality.
By the end of Gov. Kelly’s first term, 140,000 Kansas children will have been born. Will these next four years be dedicated to making the state work for them? Will we work to expand opportunities for every single Kansas child?
Will we care about them?
“If you don’t have a plan for kids, you don’t have a plan for Kansas,” McKay said. “Let’s create that plan together.”
