Topeka, KAN. – Earlier today, the U.S. Senate narrowly passed the ‘One Big, Beautiful Bill,’ which includes more than $1 trillion in funding cuts to the Medicaid program and more than $250 billion from SNAP across the next 10 years. John Wilson, President and CEO of Kansas Action for Children, released the following statement in response.
“Today, the U.S. Senate – including Kansas’ delegation – demonstrated its willingness to vote against the best interests of kids and families. Medicaid and SNAP have been transformational programs for millions for more than half a century. They keep families healthy and working.
If it becomes law, this bill will take away health insurance from thousands of Kansans enrolled in KanCare and threaten families’ access to temporary food assistance to buy groceries.
The bottom line: it is not possible to cut $1 trillion+ from Medicaid and SNAP without taking away health care and food from Kansas families who are already struggling to make ends meet.
If the U.S. House rubber stamps the bill and fails to stand up for everyday people, we’ll see devastating effects once these cuts take hold. Undoubtedly, parents and children will find it harder to access affordable health care and help to buy enough food for every meal.
This is not a future Kansans want. I call on our federal Representatives to reject this bill and recommit to policies that will actually improve child well-being in Kansas and the rest of the country.”
